US consulate in Hyderabad

US Ambassador David C. Mulford said his country’s fourth consulate in the city would be operational by the end of 2008 in hyderabad . Mr Mulford and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy on Tuesday signed a lease agreement for establishing the consulate at Paigah Palace for 5 years .

Earlier US President George W. Bush had promised to establish a consulate in Hyderabad during his visit to India and support of $ 7.6 million was announced for this. Hyderabad was chosen because of its strategic location and its strengths in the areas of biotechnology, information technology and many other fields.

Mr Mulford went on to say that Hyderabad was a well managed city with fewer problems .He thanked the Chief Minister for allotting 12 acres of prime land near Gachibowli for the permanent consulate, which would take nearly five years to complete.Demand for US visas from the State was growing year by year and the present consulate at Chennai was unable to cater to the demand, said Mr Mulford.
