Steps To Conserve Electricity

In recent times Hyderabad drastic rise in the demand of Electricity , due high rise in the demand from the IT corridors. Adding to the problems was delayed monsoon , which resulted in power cuts across state for period of 2 -4 hours . Many Heavy duty industries also had to bare the crunch of this problem.

It has been noticed that huge amounts of electricity are wasted in every corner , right from hoardings to street lights , apartments to IT giant companies .

Well these are few small techniques which if used, can reduce the requirement and increase the profits of IT companies :

1. Make sure all monitors are switched off when not in use.
2. Make sure stand alone computers are completely switched on weekends.
3. Use a BLACK colored wallpaper and screen savers.
4. Make sure all lights are switched as soon as the last employee leaves the floor .
5. Increase the temperature of Centralized Air conditioners . Example : If its set at 18 , increase it 20 ( Even 20 will be fine in Hyderabad ).
6. Instead of ON and OFF switch , use a regulator switch . During day time , brightness of light can be reduced .
7. Use one way reflectors mirrors instead on the exteriors of the buildings
8. Plant tall trees around the surroundings which acts as insulators from direct sun rays.
9. Switch of printers and scanners when not required.
10. Encourage people to take lunch breaks at the same time , at this time AC and LIGHTS can switched off to save electricity.
11. Use Solar energy .
12. Use reflector paints on the terrace that reflects sun rays.
13. Use false ceiling made out of thermacool .
14. Disconnect speakers , web cams and other computer related devices when not in use.
15. Use mirrors to the maximum extend possible as reflect the light and thereby increase brightness of the room .
    

These are few simple techniques when employed in IT & ITES companies , can make a huge impact on the power consumption .These things can also be applied to indivual houses and computers .Well as an individual you may not be able to see the impact but if we all apply this , it can save electricity in huge quantities .

Tax liability

In the recent budget our finance minister have reduced taxes for the salaried class to great extend people working in IT and ITes sector in INDIA including Hyderabad - IT HUB of India and all major cities are relieved to great extend . Based on the new slabs announced by the finance minister if India , which have already published in my previous post the projections for the year 2008 to 2009 is given below .

Save Electricity

Most of us in the IT field, before leaving for the day from office, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and leave for home happily.

That means your PC is still on.
One normal PC in the sleeping mode (Hybernation) will consume 35 watts/hr. (approx.)
Based on this ...........
For one week 24 * 7 = 168 Hrs .Of this if we consider that we are working for 68 hours, then the PC is in sleeping mode for 100 Hrs a week. For one month 4 * 100 = 400 Hrs

In a normal IT office, if we assume approximately 250 PCs are there, 250 * 400 = 1,00,000 Hrs (Sleeping Mode)
So the power wasted in an office in a month is 100000 * 35 = 3500 KWH or units.
If the charge per unit is IRs. 6, then totally the wastage value is approximately 21000 Indian rupees.

Important thing is not the monetary loss to the company but the power loss to the country. Do think about the efforts utilized for producing the power in the Mines, Thermal Stations, Hydro electric Stations, etc. If it continues, the cost of unit power will shoot up & at one stage we will not get power even if we are ready to pay a higher price.
So before you leave for home spare few moments to shut down the PC . Help the company and country by saving electricity , may be by this we may over come acute power shortages during
